highlights of 2016

I wasn’t sure what kind of post I wanted to close 2016 with. Some rad stuff happened this year though, so why don’t we look back at it.

Cutting my hair

After eleven or so years of growing my hair out past my waist, I decided it was time for a change. The plan was to schedule an appointment with my hairdresser before moving to SF. I got so busy and my hair became the last thing on my list of priorities. After watching several YouTube tutorials on how to cut your own hair, I ended up cutting it myself. Not too bad, if I do say so myself.

Graduating from community college

Graduating is always such a blur. I felt like I blacked out during the thirty second time span it all went down in. My name is called, I’m handed a piece of paper that isn’t even my real diploma, and I walk offstage. Community college is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Those three years helped me grow and figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Also, I got to graduate with my best friends! Again!

I got to see two of my favorite bands and one of my favorite female artists live on tour this year. I only recently started going to concerts and its become my favorite thing in the world to do.

My siblings and I all saw Ellie Goulding together. Her voice is just as mesmerizing live as it is recorded and honestly, truly she looks like an angel in person.

The 5 Seconds of Summer concert was everything I expected it to be. The show was special in that the band played an acoustic version of San Francisco and filmed it for a music video.

Catfish and the Bottlemen is by far the most insane show I've been to. It was the first show on the band’s North American tour, so there was a lot of energy. I left the venue with a band t-shirt, my body covered in mine and other people’s sweat, and psyched for having made eye contact with Van McCann.

Sonia and Emilio's wedding(s)

This one was a first for many things. Sonia is the first of my cousins to get married. It was my first time being a bridesmaid. Sonia and Emilio asked me to take pictures of their special day, making it my first wedding photography gig (lol). And it was my first time helping plan a surprise bachelorette party. Weddings are fun and @ my cousins, who’s next?

First time on a plane

Flying is truly exhausting and airports are so confusing. But this view is like no other I’ve ever seen.

Moving to SF

Moving to SF has been a learning experience. I’ve learned to deal with my own problems, go at my own pace, and honestly just be on my own. Also, I’m both confused and interested by bay area slang. When I first moved, I thought I’d be out exploring the city every day, but instead I’ve spent more time in my apartment binge-watching TV series with my roommates and doing homework. Truly an ‘expectation vs reality’ college meme.

Going to SFSU

I without a doubt feel like this school is a good fit for me. It’s not a spirited school that revolves around sports and such, which I’ve never been into. I’m surrounded by young, smart, and insanely talented and ambitious students. It was a little overwhelming at first and I found myself comparing myself to all these amazing people from around the country and world who’ve accomplished some cool stuff. But then I thought, “This isn’t a competition.” I mean, it is, especially with a major like mine, but it doesn’t have to be. I can learn from these individuals instead of messing with my self-esteem by comparing myself to them. My first semester was tough, hence my lack of creativity and blogging; but calling home, doing yoga, or treating yourself occasionally are good ways of distressing.

Yes, 2016 sucked in some ways. As a country, members of society, and inhabitants of Earth, we can do so much better in protecting the environment, being kind to each other, and moving forward. Let’s not only wish, but change for a better 2017. Thank you to everyone who made my year suck a little less, you are special for putting up with me and I sure hope to see you in 2017. Here’s to more concerts, traveling, family moments, and new experiences!

Monthly Playlist: December

I’m having too much fun making these playlists and I’ve gotten positive feedback on last month’s compilation of songs, so here’s my December playlist. It represents the holiday season, my excitement for new music, and visiting home for winter break nostalgia.
Happy Holidays!

Monthly Playlist: November

Guess what. I finally made a Spotify account so I thought I'd share monthly playlists with you all. There's no particular theme for this playlist. It's mostly a mix of new and not so new songs I've been listening to non-stop lately.

Let me know what you think of this post and if you'd like to see more like it.

skin care routine | cruelty-free

A lot of things change when you move out and I've been working towards taking better care of my mental and physical health. Self care is highly important and skin care is a big part of it. I didn't follow a proper skin care routine during the summer. This caused my skin to suffer and break out all over the place. I started doing my research on cruelty-free skin care brands and settled for several products that I believe have worked for me and my skin.

Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Facial Cleanser: 90% naturally derived and gentle on my skin, I'm glad to have found a face wash that doesn't dry my skin. I use it once a day, two if I wore make-up.
Nip + Fab Skin Glycolic Scrub: By far my favorite product at the moment. I use it once to twice a week. This scrub exfoliates my skin and cleans my pores out thoroughly. I am glowing after every use.
Alba Botanica Even Advanced Moisturizer: This moisturizer is super lightweight and contains 100% vegetarian ingredients. I walk everywhere now and my skin needs maximum protection against the sun. Moisturizers are a must in general, they help correct uneven tone and prevent discoloration.
So Fresh So Clean Charcoal Cleansing Nose Strips: I've been using nose strips since middle school and peeling the strip off and seeing all the dirt and blackheads is still the grossest and coolest thing ever. I'd been looking for cruelty-free nose strips and with luck found these charcoal ones. I use a strip every other week.

What are your favorite skin care products?
Have you tried any of the products mentioned above? How did they work for you?
Know of a cruelty-free skin care product that you think I should try? Let me know in the comment section below!

Hello, all! Moving to SF and settling in has been busy. I've started classes and oh my gosh has it been a workload. Syllabus week got real real fast!
I haven't been out much. Mostly because I'm really concentrating on starting the semester on the right foot, but also because my room is coming together quite nice and I like spending time in cute rooms.
Now, the breakdown on what's on my desk:
  • I brought part of my sea shell & rock collection (some of them are geodes!) with me and they look very beautiful.
  • My mom got me the elephant figurine. She bought it from a gypsy vendor and its supposed to give you good luck but only when someone else gives it to you.
  • My grandma passed away two years ago. I brought the framed picture of her with me because I know that she will always be taking care of me not matter what and I can always count on her to "darme la bendicion" how us Latinos say.
  • Instead of Christmas lights, I decided to put up lanterns. They look so adorable, especially when they're lit up at night. It gives my room a warm, laid back vibe.
  • This succulent is one of my favorite recent purchases. I'm not too good at taking care of flowers and plants, but this baby is low maintenance. I only have to water it every 7-10 days!
This will be home away from home for a while and although I haven't really felt homesick, talking to my family and friends everyday has helped me ease my way into my new life.

end of summer

top: aeropostale
shorts: forever 21
shoes: authentic and handmade from Mexico
choker necklace: todo moda

Summer is coming to an end and I'm thinking of all the cute summer outfits I had in my closet and never wore because it was just too hot to leave my house. Preparing to move has kept me very busy but it was nice to take a break from checking things off lists to spend the day at the park. I am so in love with these shorts. Not only are they perfect for this summer heat, but they flatter my figure in all the right places. Shout out to my legs! Yeah, I'm definitely packing these as lounge wear.

I've spent the last two weeks or so reminiscing about change and how and where it's happening in my life. It's finally hitting me that I'm moving away from everything I've ever known. Yes, I'll be back for holidays and stuff, but I've never spent more than a month away from home and much less without family. My family and friends have been nothing but supportive and positive. It's overwhelming having this much attention but I'm grateful for them and their support. It's a bittersweet goodbye.

It takes time to settle in and get in the swing of things, so it'll be a while until my next post.
Stay tuned...

summer glow

top: merona
shorts: american eagle
necklace: rue 21

Not much has happened this summer. I've really just been going to work and dealing with the planning, stress, and excitement that comes with transferring. I have so much to do in so little time! However, it's important to make time for the little things in life like taking care of plants, watching The Secret Life of Pets, and trying all the vegan ice creams.
The heat has been unbearable but I've come to the conclusion that there's a benefit to it all and it is that sweat makes for a good highlighter. Go out there and get your glo, boo.

lake days

jeans: iris jeans
top: ocasion
sandals: authentic & handmade from Mexico

My little vacation from work is almost over and I spent most of it sick and watching indie films. Getting a cold during the summer has always seemed crazy to me but I guess my immune system just isn't strong enough to take the change of season.

 dress: adam levine collection
necklace: todo moda

I had been waiting for really hot weather to wear this dress and the opportunity finally came by. Lightweight fabrics and cutouts are so important to my summer wardrobe. My ideal summer wears have to feel like I'm wearing little to nothing, basically. The print is so lovely and relates to my new obsession: The Bachelorette. I never thought I'd be one of those people to watch and much less tweet about The Bachelorette, but here we are. Not only do I love watching it but I love talking about it too, so let me just stop myself right here before I start ranting about Chad. I have also started watching the second season of UnReal, which is basically a TV series about the behind the scenes manipulation used to produce quality content for shows like The Bachelorette/Bachelor. So if you watch either one of these shows, I highly recommend watching the other as well.

Now that I graduated I have more time to do things that I hardly had time to do during the semester. Obsessing over TV shows is one of them, but also exploring. Which is what my sisters and I did in the pictures above. This abandoned house is close to where I live and I've always been curious about it. It looks so beaten up, haunted even, from the side of the road. When I walked to the back of it though, there was flower bushes, tall green grass, and a huge barn. Beauty can be found in the most unexpected places and I'm always keeping a lookout.

turn the page

top: mudd
bralette: forever 21
pants: highway 7 jeans
shoes: madden girl
choker: todo moda

I once read somewhere that a white long sleeve button-up is a must have in your closet...or was that just an excuse I told myself to buy this top? Whichever one it was, I am so glad I listened. It's such a breezy and lightweight top. And these jeans are my absolute favorite clothing item in the world right now. They're the ideal "cute butt" fit, they're buffet dining stretchy, and the rip at the knees is some type of punk rock voodoo perfection. Let's just say that I was hella feeling this outfit.

I'm graduating from community college this week and although it feels strange, I know it's time to start this new chapter. I've learned so much about who I am and what I want in life in the past several months. Some of it was due to college classes I took but most of it was based on personal experiences. I always knew from the beginning of senior year in high school that I wasn't yet ready to leave and be on my own. But I have grown in so many ways since those chubby cheeks and One Direction loving days that I think I'm ready now. I'll be moving to San Francisco in about three months to continue my studies there. It's basically all I'm looking forward to right now!

top: forever 21
skirt: joe boxer
boots: dollhouse

A corduroy skirt is not something I ever thought I'd wear. I haven't been taking much risks with my outfits lately. I mean, finals are coming up and I honestly just throw on whatever feels comfy. The weather is getting warmer, so there's that too. The structure of this skirt is very nice and it gives me total 70s vibes. That's always a cool thing, right?

back to black

That's right, I dyed my hair. A tad bit darker than my natural hair color, but it works. I'm still getting used to it but I'm loving it so far.
This is just a quick little post to remind you all that I'm still alive. April was a busy month. And May is about to be as busy, if not more.

Sometimes I like to take a break and be behind the camera instead of in front of it.

Afternoon walks are mine and my sisters' favorite thing to do together. And from looking at the picture, it's also my dog Mickey's favorite. Not only is it a good exercise and a cute way to bond with my sisters, but I get to see some of the gnarliest sunsets. Photography is something I admire and adore doing, but don't do enough of for an unknown reason. I leave you all with this series I called "Golden" ft. Fernanda, Morelia, and Mickey.
