still warm

This is me trying to enjoy and appropriately dress for the still warmish weather. It's only a matter of days before it starts raining and the temperatures drop. I know, other places have way lower temperatures, but I'm from Northern California, okay? Stay cozy, dolls!

journal away

journal: hallmark
top: bongo

I started writing in a journal a couple months ago and it's been so...therapeutic. It doesn't matter if I had a horrible day or the best day in a while, at the end of the day I look forward to writing away. My mind is at ease and my body feels less tense after journaling. (Yes, I know that's not an actual word. But it should be.) There's something about writing the old fashioned way, paper and pencil, that just makes it so much more real.
My favorite concept of writing in a journal is that you can make it into anything you want! Which is why I've made a list of neat things you can do in and with your journal.

  • record your day. did you have a healthy breakfast? did you pass your exams? did bae finally come through with a text? did you wave at a dog? write it down.
  • make lists of things you'd like to improve on or change about yourself. But, also make a list of things that you absolutely love about yourself and wouldn't change for anything in the world.
  • sketch and paint! even if you're not a good artist, do it. It'll look cute in the end, I promise.
  • make collages using magazine, book, or newspaper cutouts or Polaroids. a picture is worth a thousand words.
  • press leaves and flowers. they'll look oh so lovely and they'll make your writing smell good?
  • compose short stories, poetry, and songs.
  • write reviews about films, tv shows, books, restaurants etc.

That's all I can think of for now! The possibilities are endless, honestly. I encourage you to keep a journal. It'll be time well spent. And the best part will be reading it. You may cry, laugh, feel embarrassed; but it'll be okay. Reflect on the past and acknowledge how much you've learned.

on the daily

 top and jacket: adam levine
pants: twelve k
boots: madden girl

It's around this time in the college semester when I'm just d o n e. Things are at full swing at work as well. The days and weeks have gotten so repetitive and it kills me. But instead of focusing on the negatives, I'd like to talk about what I enjoy doing on a daily basis. You know, the things that you think you're gonna get tired of soon but you don't and you're totally fine with it.

blasting music when I get ready in the morning: I have a wide taste in music, but it all really comes down to my vibe at the time of choosing what to listen to. Good music puts me in the best mood and that's how I'd like all of my days to begin. With the sleepiness and exhaustion leaving my body and mind with every note that plays through the speakers. With the rays of sun coming in through my window to dance along with me.
ordering coffeehouse breakfast: On the days I go to work, I hardly have time for breakfast. But on the days I have class, I take advantage of the extra time I have in the morning to go to my local coffeehouse. The baristas are so kind and the atmosphere inside the place makes me feel warm inside. My favorite drink to order at the moment is an iced chai w/ almond milk. I looove bagels and I always get whichever new one they have for the day. A couple weeks ago I tried the pesto bagel and I felt so #blessed.
weekends of sporting events: my brother plays both soccer and football, one of my sisters plays soccer as well, and my youngest sister does cheer. I like going to their games not only to cheer them on and support my community, but because the games get super intense! I'm basically a soccer mom but without the mom part...okay, I am kinda like a mom sometimes lol.
journaling: do ya'll remember when I said I wanted to start a journal? Well I did. I won't write too much about it at the moment because I'm planning a blog post for that. But just know that I love it!

Whenever you feel like you're life is just the same day repeating itself, stop, think, and appreciate the things about your day that you do enjoy doing. If you can't think of any, then change something. Take a different route to work. Try a new restaurant for lunch. Start a collection of scented candles. These are just suggestions, but it's okay if you end up candle vlogging like Jennifer from Scream Queens. Do you boo boo.

I've been waiting

jeans: jade jeans
top: attention
cardigan: paper + tee
shoes: bongo

This is a life update so that you know I'm still alive. Well, kinda. Midterms were pretty brutal. It's been difficult finding someone to take my pictures. My sisters usually do it, but they are really busy with school and sports at the moment. I've thought about purchasing a tripod. I don't know how I feel about it though. Here's the thing, I get really shy when it comes to taking outfit pictures in public. Dear bloggers who use tripods in public, how do you do it?? Haha.

I am amazed by the sky in these pictures. It almost looks not real. Also, notice those fall leaf colors. I'm so happy that it's actually starting to feel like fall in Northern California. Yas.

Pear Festival

My hometown had it's annual Pear Festival this past weekend.
The Pear Festival is a celebration of agricultural heritage within our town. I made my way to main street pretty early in the morning because my sister was part of the parade. That gave me the advantage of walking through the entire festival when hardly anyone was there. There were lots of beautifully hand crafted products on display. Food everywhere. And so many dogs, yay! At the festival, there was a tent that provided information on the agricultural process of the pear and some history of the the town and townspeople that make that process possible. My family and I have and continue to make that agricultural process possible.
My mom, aunts, cousins, and I have all worked in the pear packing sheds. My mom has been working there every summer for fifteen years. The positions vary, but my mom is a packer and it's a pretty tough task. However, she has mastered it throughout the years.
Taking a step back to look at the bigger picture, I see the field workers. When it comes to field work, every fruit and vegetable is equally as difficult to work with but in different ways. Generations of my family have worked picking the local pear fields. My grandfather and grandmother, my uncles, and now my little brother. It's fair to say that we know this process pretty well.

Lake County has recently gone through some really tough times, and on Saturday I was reminded of how united our community can be. The Valley Fire started two weeks ago and is yet to be fully contained. Approximately 1,958 structures were destroyed, leaving an estimated 3,600 people displaced from their homes. (Lake County News) The community did not hesitate to come together to help those affected by the disaster and to welcome the many firefighters that came to the rescue. Yes, we might not all personally know each other, but after all, this is our home. That's all we have to have in common to make us realize we can make a change within our community.

Cruelty Free Make-Up (making the switch + product review)

I have made the change to cruelty free make-up!
It began one morning when I was doing my daily make-up routine that I thought "I wonder if my foundation is cruelty free." It wasn't. I searched through all my make-up (which isn't much) to see if I had any that was cruelty free; only three products were.

Animal testing is an issue I care about. When it comes to animal testing for cosmetics, I believe that beauty can be achieved without hurting other creatures along the way. Year round, 200,000 animals suffer and die in laboratories due to cosmetics testing. (Humane Society InternationalAll beauty has an ugly side.
Then it hit me: how can I do nothing about something I care about?
This is where the cruelty free make-up search began. Something very important I learned while doing my research on make-up companies is that some brands don't directly test their products on animals, but they allow or ask other companies to do the testing for them. Those brands are equally as bad as the brands that test directly.

The following are drugstore make-up brands that I've tried out. [Think of this as a make-up review kinda thing.] I usually go for the natural make-up look and I am not one to spend big money on fancy brushes and the latest palettes, so I'd be silly of me to buy from expensive brands if it doesn't feel like me.

Wet n Wild Max Volume Plus Mascara
Wet n Wild megalength Mascara
Both these mascaras get the job done. My eyelashes are small and not thick so they don't require too much work. The Max Volume Plus Mascara elongates my top lashes enough for it to look like I have lashes lol. I use the megalength mascara for my bottom lashes because the wand is thin and won't leave a mess.

Wet n Wild Ultimate Match Foundation
This foundation is very lightweight, which is super important to me when it comes to foundation, but to be honest, I don't love this product. It makes my face look oily and the coverage isn't super amazing. All I can say is that you get what you pay for. The search for a foundation continues! (Recommendations always welcome in the comments below or on my social media!)

Milani Baked Bronzer (04 Glow)
I use this as a blush and I love it! Its so shimmery and it gives me an instant glow. I feel like a sun kissed goddess. The product comes with a mirror and a brush for the application, which is pretty cool.

Jordana Eyeliner
I rarely wear eyeliner. I mostly just use it for special occasions. But I really like this one for three reasons: 1) it doesn't smudge so no looking like a raccoon here 2) it stays on for a pretty long time and I don't worry about reapplying 3) jet black looks so good.

elf Eyebrow Kit
I wasn't looking to purchase an eyebrow pencil or kit. My eyebrows are low maintenance, thankfully. But then I heard my friends saying great things about their eyebrow kits and all I was thinking was "Please let it be from a cruelty free brand." And it was! And I love it! It consists of a gel to shape and fill in and a powder to finish the work of art that is the eyebrows.

And that, my friends, is the rundown on my switch to cruelty free make-up and the products I've been using. I feel much better about the things I put on my face now because I know that animals have not been hurt in the process and creation of these products.
You can search for cruelty free products by using PETAs searchable database here!

heart out

top: socialite
jeans: vip jeans

Smells like...September. I can't believe there's so little left of this year. But I'm so happy that my favorite season is finally here!
I'm well into my second week of my college semester and I've already a) gotten a migraine in class b) presented a speech in my public speaking class c) freaked out about presenting a speech. Oh, the joys of college.
Let's talk about my outfit now! I love loVE LOVE these new distressed jeans! They're so comfy and stretchy. I've worn them an embarrassingly amount of times since I got them. True love can't be stopped, guys. My top has so many of my favorite things going on: black and white, floral print, and a peter pan collar. The contrast between my top and my jeans makes my outfit have this sort of balance between laid back and dressy. I'm all for that.

Get Ya Head Back In the Game

With my fall college semester and new work schedule just around the corner, I'm starting to get back into the college student mind-set. Some of you may have already gone back to school or may be starting in just a couple of weeks. Balancing school work with extra curricular activities and/or a job can be mind-boggling for some people. So I'd like to share some tips that help me deal with life and my somewhat busy schedule.

rice cake w peanut butter, banana slices, and chia seeds, fruit w tajin,

cranberry trail mix, carrot sticks with olive hummus
Snack Healthy
This is key for doing good throughout the day. Eating healthy snacks (and meals too!) keeps your metabolism balanced and your energy level high. Think before you head to the vending machine to buy a Snickers that's probably already gone bad. (Been there. Ew.) Don't get me wrong, I love a good Hot Cheetos bag, but what I'm saying is don't make trips to the vending machine a habit. Pack brain power snacks beforehand but treat yo self once in a while.

planner is from my school and stickers and markers are from dollar tree store
Have a Planner
I kid you not, I would not be the person I am if I didn't use a planner. Writing down deadlines for assignments and work related tasks, appointment reminders, and scheduling my study sessions has been my secret to survival. Nowadays, people use their phone to plan out their day, but I'm like Jane from "27 Dresses." I have to have a planner! To make my planner look put together (and cute!) I use colorful pens, highlighters, and stickers.

the hyve youtube channel playlist
Take Breaks and Choose Your Music
"Put your phone down! You can look at Zendaya's new Instagram selfie later!" It's easier said than done. I personally have a problem with this issue but I've learned tricks to deal with it. Taking small 10 minute breaks each half hour or so is a good idea. I take that time to very quickly check my social media or get a snack. Listening to music is a must when I'm studying or doing homework, but choosing music while trying to get work done takes up so much useful time. What I like to do beforehand is build a playlist or just pick one from YouTube.

                                                                                                             from pinterest

Keep Your Eyes On the Prize
A busy schedule can be overwhelming and that can sometimes make you feel unmotivated. Whenever I am stressed or start to lose sight of my path, I ask myself these three questions: Why did you start doing this? Who are you doing this for? What is it that you want to accomplish? The answers to these questions snap me out of the negative thoughts and remind me of who and where I am and who and where I want to be.

I really hope this helped those of you who needed a little confidence boost before heading back to school. Remember: its okay if you don't have everything under control all the time. Find what works for you and stick with it.

stripes and stuff

top: blu planet
pants: jade jeans
sunglasses: flea market

purse: vera wang
boots: vera wang

This striped shirt really caught my eye because a) I don't have any striped shirts and b) it looked so flowy and soft. I tried it on and I came upon the problem "too long to be a shirt, too short to be a dress." I figured I'd make it work. Jeans, chelsea boots, a statement purse, and animal print sunglasses did it for me. I liked the contrast between the different prints and material. That also did it for me.

You know that feeling you get when school is about to start again? And by feeling I mean the 'kinda eager but also nervous' feeling. Yeah, that's creeping up on me. I'm already stressed about the stress that'll come in the next couple of months...so not cute. I'm trying to make the best out of the rest of my summer and not worry so much about something that hasn't happened yet. Live in the moment. Soo cliche, I know.

indie pop queens

Halsey
With her first album, Badlands, set to be released in August, the best of Halsey is yet to come. However, the singer-songwriter has already accomplished what many artists dream of. Within the last year, Halsey signed with a major record label, went on her own headlining tour, and she is currently the supporting act for Imagine Dragons on their Smoke and Mirrors tour. Amazing right?! Halsey's music is so honest and deep. When I first heard her EP, Room 93, I was taken away to what feels like her own world. And trust me, once you're there you won't want to leave.

Melanie Martinez
Perhaps my favorite artist to be discovered on any season of The Voice. Ever. Melanie's mesmerizing voice and unique style captivated me from the start. (Just watch her audition with Toxic by Britney Spears!) After the show, Melanie began working on her music and was quickly signed to a label. Her EP, Dollhouse, was released last year and her first album titled Cry Baby will be released mid-August. Melanie's musical creations are made up of twisted yet compelling lyrics and sick beats. And her music videos...oh gosh. They're like an American Horror Story episode. Its impossible to confuse her artistry with any one else's.

Hayley Kiyoko
Remember Lemonade Mouth from Disney channel? Okay, remember that bad ass rebellious character from it? I had no idea what had become of Hayley Kiyoko but oh gosh am I glad I know now. Since her Disney child star days, Hayley has made appearances on several Disney channel shows as well as starred on CSI: Cyber and Insidious: Chapter 3, but what stands out to me is her music. Her most recent work, EP This Side of Paradise, is a cross between 80s pop and EDM and its basically all I've been blessing my ears with lately. What has currently put Hayley on the spot is her music video for her song "Girls Like Girls." I rather you guys check it out for yourselves but know this, in a little over a month it has already gotten 4 million views on YouTube! I'm telling you guys, she is changing the game.

Halsey, Melanie, and Hayley are the new wave of self expression. And with the new movement comes changing the way female artists are viewed in the music industry. Not only do they tell it like it is, but they do so in a way that makes listeners feel that everything will be okay. They are empowering the youth through song so that they can be themselves and use their voice to stand up to those who may not like that. I'm so here for this.

ps. also, how freaking gorgeous are they?! *heart eyes emoji*

pps. big thank you to the photographers for allowing me to use their amazing pictures!

A Look Into My Pinterest

Hey guys! Life has gotten busy since last time we talked. Last week I went back to work and the time I'd usually spend on blogging has been spent trying to catch up with my online class assignments. So I thought I'd put together a different kind of post.

I get a lot of inspiration and ideas from Pinterest. Okay, sometimes I just go on to look at pictures of food, but that's besides the point. I looked through several of my Pinterest boards and picked out my favorites to share with you guys. It was pretty overwhelming because I obviously like everything I pin, but it came down to these four Pinterest boards:

Home/Interior Decor & Design

These are actual rooms and actual homes. Wow. I don't have my own room, unfortunately. But I can't wait to have my own place just so I can put my room decor skills to test.

Beauty Inspo

Make-up. Hair. Nails. Natural beauty. This board has it all. I don't switch my look around too often, but I know where to look if I ever feel like trying something new.

My Sweet Tooth

Of course I have Pinterest boards of food and food only. (I have a Pinterest board dedicated entirely for my love of cheesecake lol!) When I need to whip up some sweet treats or get recipe ideas, this board comes in so handy.

Runway Babe

Runway Babe is my biggest board, with over 200 pins pinned. And counting. I admire the dedication and passion of the designers and everyone that is part of the journey that makes these works of art come to life. As much as I love looking at the clothing, I also love looking at the diversity within the runway models. I've never gone to a fashion show. But...one day. One day.

What's your favorite Pinterest board(s) and why?

Click here to visit my Pinterest. I'm sure you're already following me though. Am I riiiiight?

Also, leave your Pinterest info in the comment section below/tweet it to me etc. so that I can check your Pinterest out and follow you!
